We used a map to find our planting spots. Ms. Stephanie will be working in the garden with our Summer School Campers. WES families are welcome to explore the garden.

Enjoying the Beautiful Weather

First Grade Math
In first grade math, we have loved learning about penguins from around the world! We used google earth to see many different kinds of penguins in their natural habitat. Students read about penguins, and recorded important facts about their height and weight. Then they created life size drawings of their special penguins. We are also solving math equations, and reading some fun math story problems. Students are also brushing up on their addition and subtraction strategies by playing some fun math card and dice games.

Spelling/Fundations
In spelling, we are working on beginning blends with r! Students are working with blends like cr, dr, br, fr which can be a bit tricky! We finished our Trick Word list for the year, and have been reviewing the trickiest words from the year.

**Please be sure to pack a water bottle and extra masks each day**

Readers' Workshop

This week we focused on reading nonfiction books with fluency and appropriate tone. We worked in small groups to practice different reading skills. We are learning about vowel teams, and suffix endings. As the end of the year approaches, we will choose fun new reading spots around the room and get comfy with reading pillows!

Spelling/Fundations

In spelling we finished up our TRICK word list, and we made fun game boards to help us practice our spelling words. The first and second graders are so creative! We are beginning a new unit of study on  beginning blends (fl, bl, cl, sp, tr, fr, gr).

First Grade Math

In math, we began our final Number Corner unit. This month we will be working on adding and subtracting 10 from numbers up to 120, skip counting by 10 from numbers other than 10 and counting forwards and backwards by 1s to 120. We are playing lots of fun math games that are reviewing and building up our adding and subtracting skills. Students are working on solving equations with the efficient strategies.

BINGO

On Friday, we played a fun game of school wide BINGO! All classrooms logged into a school wide Google Meet and had some fun. WES students uncovered the PBIS puzzle in the hallway. Ms. Epstein had some cool prizes in her office for winners. I can't wait to see what our last school wide puzzle will be!

The Week of April 26

**Please send a water bottle and extra masks with your student each day**

Checking in on Lizzy

Students are so kind and careful when taking care of Lizzy. They check her water each day, make sure the temperature in her enclosure is warm enough, and have REALLY enjoyed feeding her! Students work in partnerships to meet her daily needs. Students are learning to take turns, communicate clearly with others, and what it means to have a classroom job/responsibility.

Social/Emotional Learning
The first and second graders have learned many things this year. We are still developing many social and emotional skills.  Now that the newest COVID recommendations have been published, students can work in small groups or partnerships to play games. We are working on: taking turns, following the rules of the game, communicating with clarity and precision, and managing our impulsivity. Students are learning to win and lose a game. I model and teach these skills each day.

Morning Recess

We have been spending time outside each morning! This starts our day with exercise and fresh air. I model and teach social and emotional skills each day through group games. Please be sure to pack a jacket for chilly spring mornings!

Spring Craftivity

This week, we made fun pom pom caterpillars during choice time! Students enjoyed making their own unique caterpillar and were proud to see their work hanging in the hall!

Readers' Workshop
This week, we worked on teaching about our nonfiction books like an expert! Students shared their books with others and taught about their favorite pages. We also worked on reading our nonfiction books with the right tone and level of expression. On Friday, we used our flashlights during independent reading! We had lots of fun on Flashlight Friday.
