Cultures Around the World Marketplace

Thank you to all of the WES families for visiting our marketplace today! Students learned a lot and really enjoyed working in small groups with students from other classrooms. Our posters will be hung in the hallway after February break.

Each student was given Cougar Cash to spend at the marketplace and purchased a craft from around the world. Here are some pictures from our day!

PBIS School Wide Celebration
On Monday, we celebrated using our PAWS in school by taping people up onto the wall! Each student added a piece of tape and really enjoyed this fun celebration.
Students have the opportunity to join the PBIS team and add their ideas for future celebrations.

Fundations/ Spelling
This week, the first and second graders began one last unit of study before February break. Students continue to learn new Power Words and have begun to dig into welded sounds (ing, ung, ong, ang) and the y was a vowel.

First Grade Math

The first graders are finishing up Unit 4 this week. Students learned to use a number line to add and subtract single digit numbers, and began working with multiples of ten. In class, we played a fun game called Super Frogs where we practiced all of these skills. Later in the week, we began to apply our knowledge of skip counting by tens. Students used bundles of popsicle sticks to skip count off decade by tens i.e. 4, 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, 74, 84, 94, 104.

When we return from February Break, we will begin unit 6. We will return to unit 5 later in the school year.

100th Day of School

On Thursday, we celebrated the 100th day of school! Together we grouped our 100s collections in many different ways. Students enjoyed sharing their special collections. Here are some pictures from our celebration.

Readers' Workshop

In reading, the first and second graders are finishing up our unit on nonfiction texts. This week we worked identifying an author's purpose. Together we read several nonfiction / fiction books and sorted them into groups. We highlighted parts of the text that support the author's purpose. Later in the week, we practiced  using the QAR strategy for answering questions about a text. Students sorted questions into the different groups.

Cultures Around the World

We are very excited to begin our Social Studies project: Cultures Around the World. We gathered with the K and 2-3 classrooms to choose the cultures we wanted to learn more about, and began exploring the resources we will use. Students met in their small groups and planned out their work for our next session.

Students will research their cultures, record their learning, create a poster showing important facts, and create a craft to sell at our Culture's Around the World Marketplace. The WES community will be invited to visit our Culture's Around the World Marketplace the week of Feb. 20th we will let you know our final date ASAP.

Writers' Workshop

In writing, we chose our favorite nonfiction piece of writing to edit and revise. Students read their piece to make sure words and sentences sounded right and looked right. We added any finishing touches to our books. Next week, we will begin using a cool app called Typing.com. It will help us to navigate the keyboard and type. I will be working with students in small groups to revise and edit their books, and produce a fancy copy using google docs and images.

Here we are selecting our favorite pieces and rereading them.
