Readers' Workshop
In Readers' Workshop, the first and second graders are working on building up their independent reading stamina. Students have a variety of high interest books that they can read and/or gather information from the pictures. Students are also reading and talking with a reading partner. We spent time practicing expectations for what a kind and helpful partner does and says.  The first and second graders are becoming more independent with all of these routines and expectations. We are right on track to begin small group targeted instruction in October!

Sheep, Shepherd and Wolf
This week, our class practiced a classroom Lock Down drill. On Wednesday afternoon, we played a game called Sheep, Shepherd and Wolf. Students practiced listening mindfully to my directions, found a quiet place to hide and then practiced lining up at our exit door in case of the need for an evacuation. I played the role of the the Shepherd and the students were my sheep. In 2022-2023 students already have an idea of who the wolf could be. It is such a hard conversation for me to have with the students. I aim to inform them without scaring them. We do process through questions students have, and I do my best to answer them!

The whole school will practice an evacuation drill in the coming months.

 First Grade Math
In first grade math, we are continuing our study of Numbers All Around Us . This week, we practiced combinations that make 5-10. Students are using their number rack and learning to explain their strategy with clarity and precision. We played games to help us practice numeral writing, as many first graders still have numeral reversals in the beginning of the year.
During Number Corner, we are identifying multiple patterns on our calendar, learning to model numbers into the 20s, and have continued with our counting practice. The first graders LOVE working with coins, and have really enjoyed singing and identifying various coins and their values.

Check out this fun song we sing throughout the week!

Math Menu
During our Math Menu time, students were introduced to using their math journal! This week, we learned how to find our journal questions, where to store our journals, and ways to share our math thinking. Our first question was: what is your favorite part on Math Menu? It was really cool to see their responses.
We are continuing to keep our computational skills strong with our windowpane, are learning game variations and have really enjoyed working with our number path activities. Up next, we will begin using our laptops to access some games and begin to learn about Seesaw our online learning platform.

Spelling and Fundations
The first and second graders are learning the routines and structure of our spelling time. We begin with a warm up and review of letters and sounds. This week, we reviewed important sight words. Students then broke up into small groups to practice important phonics skills. Students have choices that include various games and worksheets to practice sight words after their small group practice. At this time we are working on writing the basic sight words from kindergarten and first grade.

Mindful Time
Mindful time continues to be an important time during our day. Students choose various activities to help regulate their bodies. Students can draw, color, rest or work on a puzzle during this time based on how they are feeling.

First and Second Grade PAWS Celebration
On Thursday afternoon, our class celebrated a BIG accomplishment. We have consistently followed our class meeting expectations. Students are learning to sit safely, take turns talking and raise their hand before shouting out,  and tune-in to the teachers ( hush, look, listen and understand).  We enjoyed lunch in the classroom and loved watching a Wild Kratts video together!

Lock Down Drill Practice

On Friday, we practiced a lock down drill together. Students practiced finding a quiet hiding spot in the classroom. This is a challenging task for everyone. We had time to process and ask questions after the lock down.

Next week, we will read the book I'm not Scared... I'm prepared! by Julia Cook. It is a gentle and light way to talk about a topic that often scares students. We will learn to play Sheep, Shepherd and Wolf, a game which teaches  kids to listen and follow directions during important times. We will have more school wide drills throughout the year. Please don't hesitate to call me here at school if you have any questions or concerns.

Readers' Workshop

In reading, the first and second graders are learning to book shop. We are learning to pick a healthy balance of books.  Books can be hard, just right and/or easy. Students will have a mix of books in their book bags. We are reading independently for 10 minutes each day. Next week, we will learn to read with our reading partners!

Reading Pillows

The first and second graders have really enjoyed reading at their new reading spots around the room! Please help your child find a small pillow to bring to school to use during Readers’ Workshop. Reading pillows will be stored in your student’s cubby, and will not be shared with others. I will have  pillows  for any student who needs one.

Please send  a Reading Pillow to school on Monday, September 19th

Spelling/Fundations

In first and second grade, we use a combination of spelling programs to meet the needs of various spelling stages. All students will take a spelling assessment which will help me to learn more about each child's strengths and needs.  During the week, your student will have a warm -up whole group lesson, and then will work in small groups to practice specific skills.  Here are a few examples of activities your student will do at school:

Fundations Magnetic Board
This helps with letter id/ sound and word building.

Word Sort
Words sorts are a way we practice reading/writing various spelling patterns.

First Grade Math

In math, we built our own number racks! This is a tool we will use all year long as we learn about adding and subtracting strategies and patterns.  We are also learning to add onto 10, and create teen number equations. We sang a fun money song to help us learn the names and attributes of different coins, and played a fun guessing game where students had to use their sense of touch to identify different coins.

Math Menu

This week, we learned to do problem solvers. Here is an example of one of our "Which one Doesn't Belong" problems. Students shared their thinking about which item doesn't belong with the others. Students are learning to share their thinking in writing.

ICE DANCE INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS GRACE— SEPTEMBER 17 @ 07:00 PM

Join us for the premier of Ice Dance International’s new touring show called, GRACE, in Stowe, September 17, 2022.

Mindfulness in the Classroom

The first and second graders will be learning about their brain in the upcoming weeks. We will use an amazing curriculum called MIND UP.  This week, we learned 3 important parts of our brain: The prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, and the hippocampus. Students nicknamed these parts to help us remember their functions. We are learning to identify mindful and unmindful actions. We spent time drawing "what will happen next" pictures. This really helped students to think about outcomes of unmindful actions.

Mindful breathing is part of our routine in class. Students are practicing with this box breathing video.

Regulation Station
Here is our regulation station. Students are encouraged to visit the regulation station when they are feeling big feelings that get in the way of learning. We have a visual timer for students to keep track of their time. Students are encouraged to use the tools we have, rest and/or color until they are ready to return to the routine in the classroom. When students are regulated, we can begin to problem solve together.

PBIS Slip and Slide Event

What a fun afternoon we had on our giant slip and slides! Students enjoyed our school wide positive behavior celebration! More pictures to come :)

Hopes and Dreams

Over the first few weeks of school, we developed goals which we call Hopes and Dreams. Together we read the story Rex the Heart of a Hero a book about a tiny dog with big dreams of being a superhero. Each child set a goal(s) and created their own superhero character. We base our classroom expectations around ideas that support these Hopes and Dreams.

First Grade Math
This week, we began math instruction! The second grade students work with our fabulous new 2-3 teacher Mrs. Riddle, while the first graders work with me! We have begun our Number Corner routine, and have begun a short study on numbers all around us.  This week , we counted by 1s and 2s and made a cool popsicle graph! Students enjoyed playing Animals in a Cave (missing addend game) and boneyard ( a version of dominoes).

This year, our first graders will also take part in Math Menu. You will see an overview letter in your student's home-folder on Monday.

On Friday, we celebrated our math thinking with a popsicle party!

Click on the link below to see more about our first unit of study.

Class Promise /PAWS Rules
After completing our Hopes and Dreams for the year, we began forming our Class Promise. Students know that to achieve our goals, we need to agree to classroom expectations. We also created really cool self portraits to accompany our Class Promise.

Readers' Workshop Begins

The first and second graders began learning the expectations for Readers' Workshop this week. Each child has a book bag filled with high interest books and books from our Just Right library. We are learning to transition from our mini lesson to our "comfy spots" around the room and enjoy our books during independent reading.  Several times throughout the week, students take part in an interactive read aloud which helps build a LOVE of reading.
Mrs. Russin our reading specialist will begin conducting fall benchmark assessment next week. Soon after we will begin small group work and targeted instruction.
