Early Release Day/ Teacher in-service day
Sept. 28 @ 11:30
On Friday, we practiced a lock down drill together. Students practiced finding a quiet hiding spot in the classroom. This is a challenging task for everyone. We had time to process and ask questions after the lock down.
Next week, we will read the book I'm not Scared... I'm prepared! by Julia Cook. It is a gentle and light way
to talk about a topic that often scares students. We will learn to play Sheep,
Shepherd and Wolf, a game which teaches kids to listen and follow
directions during important times. We will have more school wide drills
throughout the year. Please don't hesitate to call me here at school if you
have any questions or concerns.
Readers' Workshop
In reading, the first and second graders are learning to book shop. We are learning to pick a healthy balance of books. Books can be hard, just right and/or easy. Students will have a mix of books in their book bags. We are reading independently for 10 minutes each day. Next week, we will learn to read with our reading partners!
Reading Pillows
The first and second graders have really enjoyed reading at their new reading spots around the room! Please help your child find a small pillow to bring to school to use during Readers’ Workshop. Reading pillows will be stored in your student’s cubby, and will not be shared with others. I will have pillows for any student who needs one.
Please send a Reading Pillow to school on Monday, September 19th
In first and second grade, we
use a combination of spelling programs to meet the needs of various spelling
stages. All students will take a spelling assessment which will help me to
learn more about each child's strengths and needs. During the week, your
student will have a warm -up whole group lesson, and then will work in small
groups to practice specific skills. Here are a few examples of activities
your student will do at school:
In math, we built our own
number racks! This is a tool we will use all year long as we learn about adding
and subtracting strategies and patterns. We are also learning
to add onto 10, and create teen number equations. We sang a fun money song to
help us learn the names and attributes of different coins, and played a fun
guessing game where students had to use their sense of touch to identify
different coins.
