After your virtual field trip, send me and email or picture sharing the extension activities you chose for today.

Virtual Field Trip to the Billings Farm Museum

Background

The Billings Farm Museum is located in Woodstock, VT.   First started in 1871 it is still an operating farm. The Billings Farm became a museum in 1983 and is now an opportunity to visit the 1890 farm house and see the animals including their Jersey herd, sheep, pigs and draft horses.  Field Trips and visits to the farm take you back to farming in the 1800’s.  Because of the virus the museum is closed so we will take a Virtual Field Trip with an opportunity to do many activities related to the farm and farming and gardening in general.

The website is   https://billingsfarm.org/

Now let's explore.  The home page tells us about the virtual page where you can learn more about the museum and farm with activities too.  Just click on the link in the yellow box called Billings Farm at home.  This will take you to more about the Billings Farm.

When you get to this page it is full of videos, recipes, activities, farming information and crafts.  You can spend hours here learning about farming and farm animals as well as vegetable gardening.

Baby Goats
( Check out the Baby Animals Page :) )

There are many more pages to explore on this website so don’t be afraid to keep clicking and exploring the virtual world of “The Billings Farm Museum”  This includes lots of pictures of their animals including the baby animals.  Link is on the opening page.  Also a section of Earth Day activities.  Earth Day was in April but we just had our Vermont Green Up day.  Check out these by going to Education > Earth Day Celebration.

So if you were taking an in person field trip to The Billings Farm Museum they would have farm activities from the 1800’s for you to do.  Like cleaning the barn, making butter, chopping vegetables for a soup for your lunch, and washing clothes on a scrub board.  You also get to choose your 1800’s name (see below for a list of the most popular names in the 1880’s).

The most popular names from the 1880’s

Boys - John, William, Charles, James, George, Frank, Joseph, Henry, Thomas, and Harry.

Girls - Mary, Anna, Elizabeth, Emma, Margaret, Minnie, Bertha, Mabel, Florence, Ida, and Alice

Pick 2 activities from the Billings Farm at Home web page to do and report back to your teacher what you chose.  They will love to hear what you chose to do and what your 1800’s name would be.
