Parent Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all the families who came out to meet with me for a conference! It was wonderful meeting you all and getting to share your child's work.

Robtoy Farm Field Trip
We had such a great time visiting the farm on Thursday! We made great connections between our natural resources and the food we eat and products we use each day. This field trip helped us to see what life was like on a farm long ago.

Readers' Workshop
We wrapped up our first bend in Readers' Workshop: Building Good Reading Habits. Students will have special book mark in their reading bags which has all of the skills we have learned. Students will set specific goals to improve their reading based on the topics we have covered so far.  I worked with several small reading groups. Ms. Marie also works with students throughout the day to reteach and practice specific skills. Up next, Habits for Tackling Tricky Words.

These kiddos are doing such a great job reading at home each night! So many students have filled up their reading logs! They are so proud!

Writers' Workshop
In writing, we pulled interesting leads from our favorite mentor texts and tried them out in our own stories. We learned about revision and how authors often go back and add onto a story to make it better. We really enjoy sharing time at the end of writers' workshop!

Big Buddies
We continued with our work on persistence with our Big Buddies. This week, we spent time solving our favorite puzzle. Up next, Managing Impulsivity!

First Grade Math
In  math we used our Smart Board to practice some of our math stations. We applied our prior knowledge about measuring with popsicle sticks to measuring with unifix cubes. It was so amazing to hear these kiddos talk and figure out the connections between each unit of measure. We also finished up Unit 1 in math and took our assessment.

Technology
Students are using our Chromebooks almost each day now. We are getting better each day at a logging on! The first graders play Prodigy during math time and the second graders work on Reflex math. On Friday we practice our keyboard skills. Students are learning to navigate the keyboard and to use the home row. We noticed that the j and f keys have a small bump on the keys to help us find them each time.

November 1, 2019
Early Release Day @ 11:30

Inside Recess won't get us down! Enjoying our favorite GoNoodle activities!

Long Ago and Today
Checking out a map of Waterville and Belvidere! Students found their roads and noted the rivers, covered bridges and more! We learned some interesting facts about our towns from the past, and located where the 5 schools were in Waterville and the 7 schools in Belvidere! We used Google Earth to type in our addresses and find our homes!

Writers' Workshop
This week, we worked more on adding feeling into our small moment stories. We read Shortcut by Donald Crews and noticed his story teller voice. Later we watched an informational video on trains and noticed the difference between a story teller voice vs. informational voice.  Students worked on telling their stories bit by bit and revising their beginnings to match a story teller's voice.

Readers' Workshop
Readers' worked on pushing themselves to read more and more during readers' workshop. We also practiced smoothing out our voices and rereading our books. Students practiced scooping up words with their eyes, rather than pointing to each and every word. Some students worked in small groups while others read with partners and independently.

First Grade Math

In math, we used tens frames to solve more number stories. Students practiced counting by 10s all the way to 150 and back! We also enjoyed playing a missing number game and placing multiples of tens on our number line! The first graders made predictions about our calendar pattern and drew them out this time.

We enjoyed playing on Prodigy on Thursday. This is a really cool math game that we will use during our math stations rotations. When students finish their pre-assessment, I will share their log-in information with you all!

Big Buddies
On Wednesday we saw our Big Buddies and practiced the Habit of Mind: Persistence! Students read the book The Little Engine that Could and then imagined the little engine coming across a river on the other side- they built boats out of clay and used lots of persistence!
