No School/ Teacher In-service Day
March 20

We had a busy first full week back! Here is an update of what we have been up to in first and second grade. We are doing a great job washing our hands often, and with that, our hands are pretty dry and irritated. Please feel free to send hand cream to school with your child.

We are also closing our water fountains throughout the school. They will be replaced with a water-bubbler for the time being, so we all still have access to cold water each day.  Please send your child with a water bottle.

Readers' Workshop
In reading we took a break from the units of study to refresh and set goals for the upcoming weeks. Students chose new reading spots, worked with their new reading partner and spent time conferring with with me about upcoming goals. We began a new read aloud called The World According to Humphrey! These chapter books are part of a series of books written by Betty G. Birney. In our upcoming unit of study we will be revisiting fiction books and reading books in a series. Our read aloud time is meant to model upcoming book-clubs and character analysis.

Writers' Workshop
Writer's workshop has been an exciting place in first and second grade. This week, we began a free choice writing unit. Students are busy working on a variety of writing pieces. It is amazing to see all of their writing skills and to see their imaginations take over! We have been busy conferencing to set goals for the upcoming weeks.

Spelling/ Fundations
We began a mini-unit on punctuation and capital letters this week. We have read a variety of fun mentor texts, practiced with different punctuation marks, and sang a fun song to help up remember the uses of different punctuation marks! Students are creating their own punctuation mentor journal to keep in their writing folder.

First Grade Math
We are moving right along in math! This week we focused on telling time to the hour and half hour, and learned the "make 10" strategy while adding up to 20 i.e. 9+7 is the same as 10+6. We learned a fun new game called Spin to Win bingo. Students are learning about penguins and have been learning addition and subtraction strategies up to 20 with the penguin twins Mollie and Ollie!

Science
We began a new unit of study in science! We began learning about patterns in the sky. Students made sun catchers, and star makers this week. We learned how the sun rises and sets in the same part of the sky each day, and how stars are visible at night because the sun isn't shining. Lots of  good discussions and argumentation from evidence happening in our room!

Friday Circle
On Friday, we welcomed some students from Ms. Paquette's classroom. They led our Friday circle and did a great job! We also began work on a Restorative Practices Bulletin Board which will be up soon!
