I know it has been a long time since I have updated our blog! Remote learning, school closures and report cards have been keeping me busy. Here is an update from this week!

Readers' Workshop
In reading, we have been working very hard! We met a new partner teacher from the Reading and Writing Project in New York City! Her name is Adera, and we watch special mini lessons with her each day. This will help students become familiar with watching recorded lessons if we do have to quickly pivot to remote learning.

Students are  working hard on Word Detective skills and all earned their own badges!

Here are the skills we focused on:

  • Stopping right away when we notice a problem in our reading and try to fix it.
  • Looking at a word from the beginning to end
  • Using all of the strategies we know (picture, word chunking, vowel sounds)
  • Slowly check words
  • Use trick words in a snap to help read new words

Writers' Workshop

In writing, we began a new unit of study! The first and second graders writing How to Books. This is a review unit from Kindergarten, and one of my favorites! Students are working on writing clear step by step directions, revising their work to make sure their writing makes sense, and have been drawing some very detailed diagrams!

Math
We have been working hard on developing addition strategies. The first graders are becoming excellent subitizers!  We are working on many different strategies at this time ( counting on from the greater number, doubles facts, facts of ten and turn around facts) We are playing some really fun domino games that make learning fun!

In Number Corner, we are learning about 3D shapes and finishing up our telling time practice.

Waterville Elementary School Window Walk
This year we were sad that we couldn't carry on our annual holiday trip to Chandler's Tree Farm in Waterville VT, but we didn't let a little disappointment get us down! Each classroom has special holiday lights in their windows and special decorations too!

On Monday, we did our Window Walk, where each classroom will tour around the outside of the school to see the cool lights and decorations! Our classroom theme this year was SNOW, and we have been busy making some fun decorations!

Holiday Preparations
We picked names in our classroom and worked in small groups to make handmade gifts for our our classmates! We will exchange gifts at our Holiday Party on Tuesday!  Here are some fun pictures from our room!
