Fundations/Spelling

In spelling, we are reviewing digraphs ch, sh, wh, th and ck and welded sounds am, all and an. Students are using a variety of tools to help them read and write words with these spelling patterns.

Students build words with magnet boards, write on whiteboards and use words sorts to help identify spelling patterns.

Readers' Workshop

In reading, the first and second graders are working on strategies for tackling hard words. This week, we practiced finding parts of words we knew ( am, an , ing ), ran our finger under tricky words to do a slow check, and thought about what word would make sense. We watched a fun Wild Kratts video and noticed how smooth and lively Martin and Chris talk about nonfiction topics. We practiced reading and rereading our favorite nonfiction books just like them!

Writers' Workshop
This week, we began learning about writing nonfiction books. We began reading some great mentor texts that helped us identify how nonfiction books go, and their important elements.  Students identified headings, table of contents, captions, important vocab, close-ups and glossaries. Next, week we will begin writing a class book together all about Lizzy our gecko.

First Grade Math
In first grade, we are continuing to build our addition and subtraction skills. We learned two new fun games to help build math fact fluency and fun! Drop the Beans and Sort the Sum were a fun way to practice.

In the coming week, we will review facts that make 10 and begin adding onto 10 i.e. 10+9=19. We will also review our doubles facts and build onto that knowledge by playing a game called doubles +1 -1.

Special Snack
Thank you for the brownies and chocolate chip cookies! They were so yummy:)
