Lucy Rogers Visits W.E.S.
On Friday, Lucy Rogers came to our community meeting! She talked about her job and shared a bit about her background. The students asked good questions and were really excited to meet her!

Simple Machines Leprechaun Trap Building
On Thursday we arrived at school to find our classroom turned upside down, and a note from Jolly the Leprechaun! The mess caused such a disturbance that we decided to make some traps to catch him! Students used our computers to research different kinds of traps and types of simple machines that we could use to trap that little rapscallion!

Readers' Workshop
In reading we worked with our new reading partners called "same book" partners. Children are matched with partners who are reading at around the same level. Together they selected books and began some great reading conversations... we learned to stop and ask questions like: what's happened so far, what is this section mostly about and how is the character changing. We are learning to use sticky notes to keep track of what is happening too.

Writers' Workshop
We are still plugging away and working on our informational books. This week, students told facts using numbers i.e. how much something weighs, how many times they do something, or the height of something... Many students have written several informational books. Up next, we will choose a page from our favorite book to revise, edit and publish...

Math
In math, the first graders have been working more with the number line. We have been skip counting by 5s and 10s. We also began using an awesome new app called Seesaw! The first graders are learning to log on to the computer and do math activities to help with counting by 10s, adding multiples of ten and more.  In number corner, we are reviewing analog and digital clocks and telling time to the hour and half hour.
