Hopes and Dreams

This week, we worked more on our Hopes and Dreams for the year. Students brainstormed ways they wanted to improve this year. We wrote out our goals and made a cool cloud display in our room. We will use these goals to form our First and Second Grade rules and expectations that will help support students in achieving their goals for Trimester I.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward

We read the book How Full is Your Bucket by Mary Reckmeyer and Tom Rath. Students noticed when they put their best foot forward they help fill others buckets. Together we made our own buckets and have really enjoyed writing notes to our friends sharing ways we notice them being kind and helpful! Our students are making our world a better place :)

Readers' Workshop

The first and second graders are developing some great reading habits! This week, we worked on identifying just right books, making a reading plan and building our reading stamina. On Mondays, Ms. Marie is doing her best to select books of high interest and at a just right reading level for our kiddos. Students keep their books for the week and on Thursdays we place them in our BOOK REST tub for 3 days of quarantine. Ms. Russin has finished up our Fountas and Pinnell Reading Assessments and I will begin small group/individual instruction in the coming weeks.

FUNdations
We are working on a review of letter names and sounds,  formation of lowercase letters and have begun using our cool new magnet boards! In the coming weeks, we will begin working on word building and TRICK words. Trick words are tricky because they don't follow the regular spelling rules! Trick word examples are: was, the, are etc.

Fall CRAFTIVITY

On Friday, we read a fun fall poem! Students loved checking out different kinds of poems and noticed lots of great details (rhyming, poem looked like falling leaves, and rhythm). We read the poem together and made up movements for different parts. Later we explored different kinds of leaves and did some leaf rubbing!

Math

In Math, we are working on subitizing with our eyes. We are using ten and twenty frame cards to quickly group dots to tell the total amount. We have played a lot of fun subitizing games and practiced counting by 5s. We also have learned a few new station activities: Geoboards and Ten and Some More. These first graders are so much fun to work with! We LOVE math time!
