Readers' Theater Practice with our Big Buddies

On Tuesday, we spent time practicing our Readers' Theater plays with our big buddies! The first and second graders are learning about Folk Tales from around the world, while practicing important fluency skills such as:

• Scooping up our words into phrases.
• Reading with expression to match the author's punctuation marks.
• Making our voice match the feelings in the story.

Mercy Watson Book Club in Readers' Workshop

Students are learning to read, chat and discuss their thoughts and ideas about our beginning chapter book series Mercy Watson. 

First Grade Math 

We are finishing up our unit of study: Leap Frogs on the Number Line with a surprise trip to Antarctica! We had fun making an airplane to fly on, and measuring ourselves for special snowsuits we would need once we arrived! We used Google Earth, to explore the world, and navigate this interesting continent. Students are learning about different kinds of penguins. We are using various resources to record data on height, weight and color patterns of interesting penguins.  When we return from April break, we will continue learning about penguins and apply our addition and subtraction skills to story problems. Writers' Workshop- Opinion Writing

The first and second graders have a strong knowledge of the way an opinion writer shares their feelings. Together, we wrote several opinion pieces learning how to write a beginning, middle and end. Students are now writing about topics of their choice. 

We brainstormed topics that we felt strongly about from home, school and the world around us. Students are learning to advocate for change in their world. We read  mentor pieces from students around the country covering topics such as: extra recess, bullying, school lunch, playdates with friends, and classroom environments. The first and second graders wrote their own letters and opinion books. 

Social Studies Mini Unit: Mapping Skills

This week, we began learning about the earth using a globe and Google Earth. We identified key features of a globe, and began to notice features of a map. Students named and identified water (oceans), land (continents, countries, states and towns). Each morning we traveled to a new place and learned various ways to say good morning from around the world.  In the coming week, students will create various maps and learn their address.
