Please notify Debbie at the front desk if you are planning on transporting your child either way.

Readers' Workshop

In reading, we continue to learn more about reading nonfiction books. We are becoming Super Smart about our nonfiction texts! We are learning to chat with our reading partners about our reading and retell the information from the book with lots and lots of details.

Writers' Workshop

The first and second graders, began writing their first informational books about people, places, activities and things they are experts on. Together, we began making a class book called All About Recess. This shared writing project, will help students to learn how to write using various nonfiction text features.

Punctuation Inquiry:

The first and second graders are creating a mentor journal that outlines different punctuation marks, what they look like and why authors use them. We have a wonderful selection of mentor texts, which we use to find and notice how different punctuation marks have been used.

Spelling/Fundations

In spelling, we are moving right along- covering many important spelling skills, strategies, word patterns and trick word knowledge. As a class we are working on long and short vowel sounds and beginning and ending blends.

First Grade Math

In math, we are working on developing addition and subtraction strategies. We have several new games which teach these strategies. Last week, we focused on using our number rack to build and identify odd and even numbers. Later in the week, we applied this knowledge to solving doubles equations 6+6=12 and new equations 6+7=13 or 6+6+1=13. We are learning to solve missing number equations, and continue to read and solve number stories each week. Check out this cool math game we have been playing during stations!

100 Square Jigsaw Puzzle

This puzzle is a 100s chart that students need to put together. Each level shifts the orientation of chart slightly to make for some good problem-solving.
